First a balled-up leaf
pushing up and out,
bolder than winter-
weary grass and spikes
of snowdrop.

Unfurling, the jagged
spears of leaves spread,
a web of sorts for
sunny yellow blossoms.

In time, fully flowered,
gone to seed, the winged
kites are ready to fly with
a stray puff of wind or
childish breath.

A note: The photo above was taken by my hugely talented cousin, Leah. She has a book of wildflowers one can purchase on Shutterfly. She’s amazing. 🙂
